Agnes: First Week Home

Agnes liked to make this kissy face when she was done eating. Breastfeeding was a challenge at first, but this made it worth it.

Agnes came home on Sunday, February 1st, with Grandma Nancy there to welcome her all the way from Indiana. The first week home was of course a blur, with several trips back to the doctor's office and hospital to see if her jaundice was improving. Agnes spent the first two nights at home in our bedroom, where I obsessively checked to see if she was alive every ten minutes using a tiny flashlight so as not to disturb Devin. Then she spent about 48 hours on phototherapy with a bili-blanket to help her clear the bilirubin in her blood (bilirubin is what causes jaundice). Someone had to sit up with her all night with the blanket, so Devin, Nancy, and I took shifts, watching a lot of television in the process. The highlight of the week was the arrival of Nancy, who made everything so much happier and easier after the long hospital stay, and then the arrival of Grandma Ro and Grandpa Rolly from Illinois. We were also relieved to find that our dog Rufus was cool with Agnes. He likes to lick her hands and feet and sit with us on the couch, and he loved the attention from his grandparents.
